Mark appears hard on the outside but within has a soft side for the next-door neighbor Shelly, a colored girl who in return has feelings for him. Mama Rose, Shelly's grandmother, is the heart and soul of the neighborhood.  She has a major influence on everyone and everything she touches.

Through the years, many things occur in all of their lives but there is an undying connection between Mark and Shelly.
